About Gangtok

Capital of the remote northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, Gangtok stretches along an undulating ridge and enjoys glorious views of the mighty Kanchenjunga, India’s highest mountain. Although it has seen escalating modernization in recent times, this city of 30,000 still has a more relaxed demeanor than most Indian towns its size. Gangtok is a good base from which to explore the state’s surrounding attractions.

The Silk Road was an international passage with historical significance. The ancient Silk Road helped to integrated the old Chinese, Indian, Persian, Arabian, ancient Greek and Roman cultures and promoted the exchange of the Western and Oriental civilizations. Half of the Silk Road, which winded along between Xi’an to the east bank of the Mediterranean, was located in Xinjiang, China. Xinjiang was a place where the ancient Western and Oriental cultures met and many famous historical people visited. Lots of historical relics and items of rare cultural interest were left in Xinjiang.

The Pakhui (Pakke) Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh adjoins the Park on its North-eastern point. The area is criss-crossed by the river Jia- Bhoroli and its tributaries namely the Diji, Dinai, Doigurung, Nameri, Dikorai, Khari etc. A few jheels (during the rainy seasons) also dot the area. The Jia Bhoroli river and the tributaries display devilish look when the incessant downpour in the upper reaches during the rainy season make it swell.
Clouds End Villa, Dharmashala situated between Dharamsala Kotwali bazaar and the Tibetan market in McLeodganj, is a sprawling 9 acre property with its own step fields, gardens and forests. It is the ideal place to laze around in the garden, read a book or write in the privacy of your cottage. Go for early morning walks, inhale the fresh mountain air, listen to the calls of many birds and make plans to return soon and never leave again.

Clouds End Villa, Dharmashala is the residence of the erstwhile rulers of Lambagraon-Kangra. The Raja’s summer house was built during the British period and has 10 rooms to rent, strewn out over the garden in independent cottages.

The Apsara Hall, a large cottage with two cozy attic rooms on the first floor, stands in the center of the garden. Named after the female deities all around in the valley, the spacious, marble floored hall, (12 m x 11 m) with open fire place and toilets and shower, is ideal for long weekend group activities like meditation and yoga retreats, seminars and study workshops.
